Debra Rich — Mosaic, Collage & Assemblage Artist, Sarasota
I am a Sarasota, Florida, artist who turns ceramic, glass, paper, and unexpected found objects into colorful mixed‑media mosaics with texture, personality, and a hint of surprise.
Debra Rich had a collection of chains and costume jewelry and wondered what to do with it. She decided to make a tree.
The background is painted. The trunk is made from beads and chains of beads, and the leaves and flowers are mosaic tiles. Fused-glass birds sit in the branches. The grass is made from faux moss.
The sun is a pin, and so is the cat, who reaches for a butterfly at the base of the tree. The dog is a found porcelain knick-knack. Butterflies, bees, and a hummingbird fill out the scene.

Debra Rich spotted wooden crabs with their claws, a flying fish, and a starfish at a thrift store, and they sent her straight back to the Gulf, which she lives close to. She wanted something minimal that told the story of life under the sea.
The background is paper printed with water ripples. A crab sits in the middle with its claws open, two starfish float above it, and a polka-dot flying fish swims along the bottom. A murex shell sits in the lower left corner and a turban shell in the lower right, which makes this an upcycled assemblage. When she finished, it made her smile.

This side table started as a garage-sale find. I transformed it into a mosaic-topped accent piece with a hand-set arrangement of fifteen Mexican Talavera tiles — every one hand-painted, every one different.
The center panel features traditional motifs: sun faces, a crescent moon with stars, a sunflower, and intricate floral mandalas in cobalt blue, terracotta, turquoise, and gold. A border of 1×1" glass tiles in graduating blues and turquoise frames the Talavera center. The outer field is set in 2×2" ceramic pieces in warm amber, sage, and smoky brown.
The dark walnut-stained wood base is an X-frame folding design — sturdy when open, flat when stored. The tile edges are hand-cut, not machine-trimmed — the irregularity is part of it.
One of a kind. When it sells, it's gone.
